Waiting for Life

Well, I have not been a student for 10 weeks and have only worked 2 of those weeks. Those 2 weeks were a lot of fun. I got to be a replacement gaffer for a term 3 VFS shoot. I was also a Term 1 mentor. The gaffer job was soooooo much fun! I got to work with students 6 months behind my class and get a feel for another class' dynamics. Being a mentor is hard. How much do you tell them what to do? Do you let them make mistakes before you tell them how to do it better, or do you tell them first? I also had to drive a very large rental vehicle to all the locations with the gear in it. I am used to driving a minivan but this SUV was awkwardly wide.

Anyway, I have no real job. I am a permittee in the Calgary IATSE union but that does not garuntee a job.

I now feel like I am waiting for life to start. I was a student so that was productive but now I am waiting for someone to acknowledge that I know what I am doing and pay me for it. Filming is pretty much done for the winter so I will get a real job until it starts up again. I really just want to use what I know.

Anybody out there need something to be filmed? or edited? or lit? or redecorated? or designed? I really want to do something....... :(

Hello Again

Hello again to my 5 followers. Thank you for that. I am sure that by now you have realized that my blog is more of a journal about me and that I sound a lot more sarcastic than in real life.

Anyway, my vacation is over and I am graduated completely from VFS. I now need to find a steady job and make some money. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck with that yet but its only been a week.

The Problem with Blogs

The problem with blogs is that once you have one it can be addicting. I know I don't write much here but sometimes I think in blog posts. It's a way to vent, but of course, being online means anyone can find and read it so you have to be careful with what you type. As well this is how a lot of the untruth on the internet gets to the internet. Bloggers are people with opinions and a keyboard. They may sound knowledgeable but that doesn't mean they are. Then there are the professional blogs that actually do know what they are typing about. Anyway beware the search engine that sends you to blogs, they may not know what they are writing about.

My New Favorite Show

Fraggle Rock is an awesome show. I just discovered it now and never watched it as a kid even though it is for kids. It is educational without being 'look at what you learned' . It is about 3 different worlds and how they are connected. Humans, fraggle rock, and the gorg garden. It has catchy songs and a variety of muppet creatures. Also the character Gobo is Canadian, of course this isn't stated but some of  his phrases and mannerisms are very distinctive. Anyway it is definitely my new favorite even though it  was only on tv In the 80s.

My favorite characters are the Doozers, they build towers for fun and wait for Fraggles to eat them so there is space to build more towers. Sprocket the muppet dog of the human world is also pretty awesome. He has fingers and communicates with his person through 'charades'. Fraggles are  multicolored anamorphic creatures with tails that live underground are about 2 feet tall and eat radishes. Fraggles call the human world Outer Space,  the Fraggle Traveling Matt is exploring human culture and sends postcards back to Fraggle Rock for his nephew to collect each week. Sprocket often catches Gobo getting the mail bet is then distracted and lets him go back underground.

How can you go wrong with a magical trash heap that gives advice? Nyah...

Other favorite shows of mine

What's next

Well, Finals are done. I am so glad I am not an editor. The editors and producers still have a lot of work to do with final project but the rest of us actually have some free time. I am loving having the time to read again.

We do have classes again this month. Film Theory: World Cinema and Career Prep. Film Theory required everyone to give a presentation on a non-Hollywood film, series, or director. Career Prep is about branding yourself. for example we are supposed to create personal business cards and have a professional online profile. Branding yourself is a big deal, your sense of style is constantly evolving so to choose something to label yourself for the next 2 years or however long the 250 business cards last is a big deal.

If you can't tell, I am a bit worried about deciding how to 'brand' myself. I always think that anything that represents me should show my personality but a personality is complex. How do fit the essence of you on a business card. I assume that if you are reading this blog you know me in real life. If you have any ideas about how I could brand myself on a business card please let me know, all input welcome.

My Day

Today I really missed playing saxophone. My Aunt and Uncle took me to the Symphony tonight. Mahler's Ninth. It was so cool watching professional musicians. We were in front of the bass section. One bassist was really into it, it was fun to watch. The Conductor would have been very confusing to play under. I know music and I couldn't even figure out what the time signature was most of the time. He was also really into it, you could here him breathe when he wanted another section to start. By the end of the first movement he was sweating. There were some very interesting musical choices that I was curios as to how they were depicted in the music. I was also very impressed by how loud a single violin can be and how quiet 30 violins and 8 cellos can be. The final movement was a lot of pianissimo to the point you thought it was over then they started again louder, this happened several times. The symphony was over an hour long and they only rehearsed for a week. Crazy, band class practiced for months and maybe had 20 minutes of material. It is also amazing that people can write cohesive non repetitious music that lasts over an hour. The men had white bow ties and tails; women just had to wear all black, some pants, some dresses, some high heels, some long sleeve, some cardigans. Music is cool because you aren't forced to retire. There were 30 year old and 60 year olds sharing music. As long as you can physically play and you can still hear you can stay. Now I want to write music for parts. I have trouble writing for just me, making it up usually leads into something I recognize. To be able to create your own melodies that can fit a piece of music that long is amazing. I seem to be saying amazing a lot. But it really was cool.

group projects

Remember group projects in highschool? Or better yet elementary?

I was always the one who did most of the work and told the other people what to do. I hated doing that but that was the only way things would get done. I can lead but i dont like to. People are followers. I expected that group projects in university would be smoother and people would want to be involved. Wrong. Most of it is the same. I am in 2 groups currently that I am frustrated with because everyone chose their parts but not everyone is doing theirjobs. I cannot do my job without work from other people but they haven't been doing it. It has been promised to me multiple times. And that is the worst part. So I am expecting this information but it doesn't come. One part I have beeb waiting 4 weeks for. I hate being a mean person because they freak out if I get mad at them for not fulfilling their jobs but what else am I supposed to do. This isnt like a project in highschool where i can just take over and do it for them so at least i can get a good mark. They actually have to do the work themselves.

People are annoying.

Bring Back the Bible

I am very frustrated in the lack of Bible in church and society and life in general.

What happened to the time when Christians regularly went to church and regularly talked about the Bible with family. At the church I am currently attending it bothers me that people don't bring their Bibles. Today it seemed like the pastor expected people to not bring their Bibles. Bibles give context that reading a verse on a screen can't give you. My church is fairly modern, yet we sit on pews. Not the padded kind either. In the back of each pew are Bibles and Hymn books. We never sing from the hymn books but that is a different topic. Ok so you forget your Bible in the rush to get to church on time (or half an hour into the service as is now strangely popular). Then use the Bible that has been so kindly provided by the church for your use. Christians should be reading their Bible at home so they have a Bible. There are people who read the Bible on their device, fine, just don't get distracted by Angry Birds during the sermon. Then there are the people who come prepared to take notes but still don't have a Bible open. Then what are the notes for if they aren't related to their personal Bible and notes in the margins or highlighted areas. you won't remember if this was important to you 3 years ago unless you can see it in context in your own Bible you study from.

Gay People.

Yup, I'm going there. The Bible clearly states that sexual relations with the same gender is a sin. I will admit that this caused me to be homophobic until recently. As Christians we are not to exclude anyone but take the log out of our own eye before taking the speck out of our neighbours eye. Everyone sins differently. We are not called to judge. I got over my homophobia because I got to know someone really well and be good friends before I found out he was gay. This happened because people don't talk about whether they like girls or guys in regular conversation. Straight people don't flaunt their straightness or come  out saying they are heterosexual. Why is it such a big deal that they need to say they are gay. Can't they just be? What they do is against how God wants people to live but so is adultery and lieing and cheating and stealing and divorce. The Church needs to stand strong on the point that homosexuality is wrong but they also need to realize that everyone sins. Both sides need to realize that God wants everyone to love him. I know of people that called themselves gay but then became Christians and read what God thinks about homosexuality and are now in heterosexual marriages. God can change people but the Church needs to let Him.
